miss twiggley's tree - a picture book for kids

my biological mother found this book at a yard sale and gave it to my four-year old niece last year. it has since become a treasured family favorite. it's so worth it! buy it for kids or for yourself - may i recommend bookfinder over amazon? http://www.bookfinder.com - yes, you can thank me later!

http://www.amazon.com/Miss-Twiggleys-Tree-Dorothea-Warren/dp/1930900171

"Why did Miss Twiggley live in a tree? Why did she send her dog, Puss, out to do the shopping? Why did she always run away and hide when people came to visit? And it was rumored that Miss Twiggley had even more peculiar habits...

Old Miss Twiggley
Was friendly with bears.
"They shed on the sofa," she said,
"But who cares?"

And was it true, as the mayor's wife had heard, that she actually slept in her hat? "Simply disgraceful!" they said. But when a hurricane hits the town and the water rises, everyone is grateful to Miss Twiggley and her tree. Even better, Miss Twiggley herself learns a very important lesson, with a warm and happy ending."

now it turns out an animated movie was made from this - has anyone seen this? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0391347/

and you can rent miss twiggley's treehouse? http://www.fredericksburgcornercottage.com/twiggleystreehouse.htm not! this texas B&B is managing to capitalize off people's emotional attachment to this book and they don't even have a real treehouse! they're cute anyway, in my book.

it's a new group, smaller than ours, without our library of photos and information, but we can build it up. i like facebook and it's much bigger than tribe, so it will be easier for us to get *local* people to help us build our treehouses. they're just waiting for us to pounce, en masse! let's go!

I just hauled a full size bed frame about 60 ft up into my back yard redwoods.
One big tree that becomes two trunks after six feet. I have it wedged between them now I just need to tie in supports and cover it.
I'll have pics soon.
I'm using P-cord so it should be more that strong enough for two people.

What do y'all think? I'll ask again after the pics are up.

This is in south Berkeley and I have an awesome view.

hey peeps, there's a decent chance that tribe will soon go belly-up and all this magic will disappear like fairy dust. if one of you enterprising souls would like to start a new treehouses tribe here:

http://free-association.net/index.php?option=com_associations&Itemid=36

i would join. i'm not interested in starting a new tribe myself, *but* maybe this still serves a purpose, despite the fact that you never post, my love dollies, do you? see you in the trees...spas

treehouse without a tree

all,

was wondering if I could get your input on a project that is in the idea phase of things.

friends and I would like to build a treehouse that will be up for about a week at burning man. the place where this occurs is on a alkanated prehistoric sea bed with no trees. I was thinking about bringing one treepole or three and have respectively a square platform or a triangular one. I think the three logs would be more stable. can place the logs in the playa but no deeper than two feet. guide lines or not? want the treehouse to be high enough so that a person can walk underneath and a swing can be put into place. hole in platform for the rope ladder.

any suggestions, opinions, comments, queries?

thanks all

The House Above the Trees

chai, you reminded me. one of my favorite children's authors wrote in the 20s and 30s and most of her stuff is now out of print, but two are back in print, or three. and they are magical, beyond magical. share them with children and adults you know!

the house above the trees takes place partly in a treehouse, actually a few types of treehouses. and the treedwellers are a fascinating lot. but the tree girl and her father the tree man actually appear in a few of ethel cook eliot's other stories as well. for example, the out of print house at the edge of things. yes, you want to read this story!

In A Tree House

In A Tree House

Light
Will someday split you open
Even if your life is now a cage,

For a divine seed, the crown of destiny,
Is hidden and sown on an ancient, fertile plain
You hold the title to.

Love will surely bust you wide open
Into an unfettered, blooming new galaxy

Even if your mind is now
A spoiled mule.

A life-giving radiance will come,
The Friend¹s gratuity will come -

O look again within yourself,
For I know you were once the elegant host
To all the marvels of creation.

From a sacred crevice in your body
A bow rises each night
And shoots your soul into God.

Behold the Beautiful Drunk Singing One
From the lunar vantage point of love.

He is conducting the affairs
Of the whole universe

While throwing wild parties
In a tree house - on a limb
In your heart.

in the treehouse we made. We had a running bet actually.

We rented in a cool old house in Santa Cruz, the Big Yellow House. There was a big old redwood tree in back. We built a hexagonal treehouse about 60 foot up. WIndows on every side, branches entering the living space and growing out between spaces in the wall.

The early stages were done hanging from ropes on harness. We made a double pully to elevator materials up in the tree.

Still with me?

last week in jerusalem i heard the most amazing woman perform at the local activist center/cafe/pub (called the Dyla) - Aliza. from new paul new york. she told us about what the local environmental activists are doing to save the streams in their small town - they ran environmental activists with no political experience for city council and based their campaign around it - AND WON! rockin' righteous people in new paul.

she sang a song she'd composed for julia butterfly hill, the song is called 'julia' - fucking kickass song, this woman aliza reminds me a bit of the indigo girls, only jewish punkass and cuter! she said when julia herself heard the song she was inspired to persist in her battles. i hope you'll all hear this amazing song someday and that you'll all be inspired to persist in the good struggle.

i get all these great stories from new members ever since i made this tribe moderated...

why would i do that, you might ask? it's not like we're talking about sex in here. FUCKING A, maybe we should be. something's got to stir you people up, and it's got to somehow be connected to treehouses. so let me probe your psyche and find out what happened in the tree back then? go on, you can tell me.

seriously, you told me, when you asked to join this fine tribe, what interested you in treehouses. now i want you to tell everyone else here. go on, yes, i am talking to you. yeah, go on. hit reply. won't kill you.

Hey, folks. I just stumbled across the Treehouse tribe. Thought you all might want to know about the Hostel in the Forest, in Brunswick, GA (USA).

We've got a tribe here: http://foresthostel.tribe.net and the
hostel's website is at http://www.foresthostel.com

Here's one of the treehouses, the Honeymoon suite, so-named because it was built for the Hostel as a wedding gift:
http://www.foresthostel.org/cgi-bin/photos.pl?dir=album/HostelTour&site=foresthostel&pic=dscn0254.jpg

There are more, but I figured you all might want a quick link to see at least one...
